California Dreaming of Socialism with Health-Care for All Undocumented Immigrants

California is maintaining its position as one of the most liberal and progressive states running full bore toward socialism. The state just voted to become the first state in the nation to offer all undocumented immigrants state-subsidized health insurance. This will be regardless of age.

Immigrants who entered the country illegally will now be given 100% health coverage at any age. They already have made a move to expand its Medical program to offer state-subsidized health insurance to those who were younger than 26 and over the age of 50.

This will come into effect in 2024 and it will make California the first state to achieve universal access to full health coverage. This expansion will not cover an additional 700,000 undocumented Californians.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of the state, made this move to expand the states medical program as a part of the 2022-2023 state budget allocation. They put in place the plant to cover close to additional three-quarters of a million undocumented residents ages 26-49 beginning no later than January 1st, 2024.

This plan builds up the existing one that has already covered those younger than 26, over the age of 50, or those who are a recipient of the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

This move by Newsom will lead to the biggest drop in the rate of uninsured Californians in over a decade. Those who are undocumented in the state make up the largest group of those who are uninsured in the state.

The University of California Berkleys Labor Center projected that almost 1.3 million people under the age of 65 are uninsured in 2022 alone.

State Sen. María Elena Durazo praised the move as a budget victory. She said in s statement on he Twitter account that her state is one step closer to ending the outdated and discriminatory policy that prevents undocumented Californians from accessing affordable health care. This is a victory for the millions of undocumented Californians who contribute $3.7 billion in state and local taxes and over $40 billion in spending power to our economy ever year.

Californias Legislative Analysts Office (LAO) offered an analysis of what this is going to look like financially for the state to expand its Medical program for undocumented immigrants. It will cost the taxpayers $2.1 billion on an ongoing basis.

Although it is hard to believe, California is not alone in planning for moves like this to cover all of their undocumented immigrants with health insurance. Other states are planning similar decisions. In 2020, Illinois extended its state-funded health care to low-income individuals who are 65 years old and older and undocumented.

Illinois also proposed new legislation that would provide state-subsidized health insurance to undocumented immigrants who are 19 to 54 years old and live at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty line.

Oregon has done a similar thing as well with their Cover All People Act. It will expand the state-sponsored health insurance to all adults who would qualify for Medicaid if it were not for their immigration status.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), they found that noncitizen immigrants were as likely as citizens to work but they are significantly more likely to be uninsured because of limited access to both public and private insurance coverage.

There are already people watching California who is calling the federal government to follow suit. If Democrats somehow manage to keep control of the House after the November midterm elections, it might not be long before we see the Biden administration making a similar move.
