In the 2020 election cycle, President Joe Biden came out of the basement long enough to make promises that have come back to haunt him during his presidency. The latest pithy election slogan to crash and burn was his famous “The buck stops here” ad. The ad went on to state, “Harry Truman said it. It means no excuses. It means taking responsibility, the ultimate responsibility for the biggest decisions in the world.”
Biden is whistling a different tune now, especially with the looming debt ceiling crisis. His refusal to begin negotiations on a debt-ceiling bill for weeks following the bill’s passage in the House has resulted in a last-minute scramble to meet the June 1, 2023 default deadline.
It was a waiting game and a gamble that Biden lost. He never believed that the Republicans would unite and successfully pass a bill, meaning he could continue his administration’s spending spree without any real opposition.
In question is House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) insistence that spending needs limits. Conversely and predictably, Biden seeks to continue unchecked spending and fund progressive agendas through new funding from taxes. In other words, Biden wants to continue to pay for the progressive playground by raising taxes.

During a recent interview Biden commented, “On the merits, based on what I’ve offered, I would be blameless.” He went on to blame Republicans for the crisis, saying, “On the politics of it, no one would be blameless. And by the way, that is one of the, one of the things some [people] are contemplating. Well, I gotta be careful here. I think there are some MAGA Republicans in the House who know the damage that it would do to the economy, and because I am president, and presidents are responsible for everything, Biden would take the blame. And that’s the one way to make sure Biden’s not re-elected.”
The buck stops far short of Biden. And it is not the first time the buck has failed to reach Biden in his role as president.
Inflation is not Biden’s fault, according to an interview in June of 2022. In his words, “If it’s my fault, why is it the case in every other major industrial country in the world that inflation is higher?” he asked. “You ask yourself that? I’m not being a wise guy. Someone should ask themselves that question. Why? Why is it?”
And the buck was not even in the same room as Biden after his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. In a startling spin, Biden once again repeated U.S. President Harry S. Truman’s catchphrase, “The Buck Stops Here” while simultaneously blaming former president Donald Trump.
As for the border, shifting blame falls to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre who followed in her boss’ footsteps by blaming Trump, a claim that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is all too willing to back. But Trump alone is not responsible, according to Jean-Pierre. “Failing authoritarian regimes in Venezuela, as well as Nicaragua and Cuba, are causing a new migration challenge across the Western Hemisphere. So, what we’re seeing is a new pattern.”
Meanwhile, the implosion, mistrust, and controversy of the Covid vaccines were not because they were an ineffective and untested “solution” pushed by Biden and his administration. It was entirely because of social media and “misinformation.”
It is not enough that he refuses to acknowledge his part in his administration’s failures. Whenever possible, he attempts to pass that buck on to unwilling U.S. citizens and have them foot the bill. His mortgage rule, penalizing people with good credit and requiring them to pay more money on loans to fund borrowers with poor credit, and his student loan “forgiveness” push, having citizens pay for others’ college debts, are two examples of this arrogance on display.
The most obvious way to ease American debt is for the Biden administration to hang on to those bucks they are passing. The country would be debt free in a year.
“The Buck Stops Here” is not the only campaign promise Biden has broken. But, judging from the catastrophic failures of the ones he has kept, the only hope for America to survive the next two years is if he breaks them all.
